Deborah Kaye Nance; also known as “Dee”, “Dee-Dee”, “Debbie”, “Kaye”, or “Momma and Nana”, by family and friends, was born August 7th, 1956, to Raymond Oliver and Patience Elizabeth Nance in St. Louis, MO. Her father was an Army veteran of WWI, and her mother managed a convenient store the family owned.

She was an intelligent and active child, who loved music and dancing. When Dee was 17 years old, she lost her father, and to honor her father’s memory and help provide for her mother, Dee enlisted into the United States Army. During her service, she was stationed in Germany serving in the postal operations unit for her fellow service men and women.

Dee was honorably discharged in 1977 and went on to work at the United States Postal Service and Army National Guard. Dee worked for the Postal Service for over 17 years, until she decided to pursue her true passion – a career in Nursing. Dee was always enthusiastic about service and helping others.

While at Henry Mayo, Dee worked in various units such as, Med-Surg, Acute Rehab, Transitional Care, and Behavioral Health. She also took on additional responsibilities, working as Chief Shop Steward for the nurse’s union, U.E. Local 1004. Dee retired from Henry Mayo after 22 years of service, then, decided to continue her service at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in North Hills, CA. Dee continued to work at the VA for another 5 years until she medically retired, after being diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma. Dee fought cancer for 5 years and showed that she could still be a fiery mother, grandmother, and friend through one of life’s toughest battles.

She was known by family and friends as a fierce Leo, who was bold and independent. She was the type of person that kicked ass and took names later. Well in all honesty, Dee never bothered with taking the names. Yet, despite that fiery passion, she was a God-fearing, kind-hearted, and giving woman that believed in helping others and serving her community.
